Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano about 250 kilometers east of Kampala on the border between Uganda and Kenya. At 4000 square kilometers, Mt. Elgon has the largest volcanic base in the world. This mountain is not difficult to climb, hikers can also check out the vast caves, waterfalls, cliffs and gorges. There are several trekking trails around Mount Elgon and a full trekking circuit to the peak takes 4-5 days to complete using the Sasa and Sipi trails. There are also one day trails on the mountain from Kapkway Exploration Centre.

This is the shortest route to the Peak at Wagagai.

Day 1: Kampala – Mbale
We depart Kampala with sightseeing along the way for Mbale. Upon arrival check in at your lodge for lunch. Later we visit the scenic Sipi falls before retiring for dine rand overnight stay. Prepare for the next 4 days on the mountain.

Day 2: Budadiri to Sasa Camp
We report at Uganda wild life Authority offices to arrange with the porters, rangers and guide ready for the hike. The first day on this trail is the most challenging as the ascent is tough and rugged for over 1600m. The 7 – 8 hour trek takes us to Sasa River Camp (2900 m) where we have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3: Sasa Camp to Mude Camp (3500m)
After breakfast at the camp site, we take a 4-5 hour walk through the forest to Mude cave campsite where we camp for diner and overnight stay. This is our camp from where we will hike to the peak at Wagagai.

Day 4: Wagagai Peak (4321m)
We have early breakfast at the camp and then walk through the moorland zone up to the main Peak Wagagai. Pose for a photo shot and later trail back to Mude Cave Camp

Day 5: Mude Cave Camp to Budadiri
After early breakfast, we spend the day descending to the base of the mountain. Depending on your stability, we may stop at Sasa river camp for overnight and descend on the 5th day (inquire for this arrangement.
Arrive at the camp and transfer to Mbale for dinner and overnight stay.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Activity: Descend, overnight Mbale.

Day 6: Drive back to Kampala
Have breakfast at leisure and drive back to Kampala where you may be dropped or transferred to the airport for your home bound flight.
